A new study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and researchers in a lab study in India reveals that erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra may have a much lower rate of success compared to Viagra. In fact, the study, which involved 30 men with ED who were willing to have an oral sex, found that the rates of Viagra was lower in the group who had had a previous successful treatment with Viagra.
“This is the first time that a drug has been shown to have a lower rate of success in comparison to Viagra,” said Dr. Jane Smith, an expert on male sexual dysfunction at the University of Washington in Seattle. “It’s also interesting to note that the rate of success was much higher than the rate for Viagra in the past.”
Although Viagra, also known by its generic name sildenafil, is one of the most commonly prescribed medications for ED, the overall rate of success in the study was higher, the researchers said.
The results were published in the May 15 issue ofPLOS Medicine. This study is the first to examine the relationship between Viagra and ED. The authors found that among the men who took Viagra, erectile dysfunction was more common among men who had been taking the drug for more than a year, compared to men who had not taken it for at least four months. The researchers also noted that the rate of ED for men with the previous successful treatment with Viagra was lower.
